Agronomy Update

Flagging Technology

Published on Friday, June 17, 2016

With an increase in technologies available and the fact that farmers are often using more than one, it has become difficult to keep track of where our technologies and varieties are planted. Spray misapplications have become more common. This has led individuals from the University of Arkansas to develop and promote the program “Flag the Technology.”

“Flag the Technology” uses uniquely colored flags to indicate different herbicide tolerances. Farmers are encouraged to display flags demonstrating the technology used near the field edge or in an obvious position to anyone who may be applying herbicides in the field. The use of these flags will hopefully prevent misapplications as well as off-target movement. If you choose to “Flag the Technology,” be sure to communicate this to your applicator.

Yellowed Corn Update

As a follow-up to last week’s newsletter, I want to mention that we are beginning to notice the yellowing symptoms associated with rapid growth syndrome throughout Ohio. This syndrome is commonly found on Beck’s XL
® 5828™*brand but can be found on other hybrids as well. The below pictures show the wrapping and then yellowing up of the plant tissue. These corn plants will return to their green color again after approximately one week. Past studies have indicated that this syndrome does not result in a lag in yield.

If you have any questions or concerns about yellowing corn in your fields or flagging technology, please do not hesitate to reach out. Beck's has flags available if you are interested in implementing this program on your own farm.
